Gallagher

[Two More Recent Pics]
He pretty much looks the same:

He has some scary health issues. From Wikipedia:
During a March 10, 2011 performance in Rochester, Minnesota, Gallagher collapsed on stage, gripping his chest. He was rushed to Saint Marys Hospital, where it was determined that he had suffered a minor heart attack.[13]

A year later, on March 14, 2012 just before a performance in Lewisville, Texas, Gallagher began to experience intense chest pains. Gallagher's manager said the comic suffered a "mild to serious" heart attack and was placed in the hospital in a medically induced coma while doctors tried to determine what was wrong with his heart.[14][15] After replacing two coronary stents, doctors slowly brought him out of the coma on March 18, 2012. He quickly recovered and started talking to his family. His manager, Christine Sherrer, stated that he was breathing on his own, moving and telling jokes.[16]

He was released from the hospital March 21, 2012. On March 22, 2012 he was interviewed by Scott Spears of WDCM in Marion, Ohio. During the interview he announced his retirement from live stage performances. Giving a glimpse into his retirement plans he left open the possibility of performing at private parties. He also stated that he would post his writings on the internet.[17] On March 24, 2012 he suffered another minor heart attack after running out of his heart medication and was again hospitalized.

I also read online how he walked out of a radio show when asked why his performance was racist and homophobic (probably because of stuff like this. Adult language, FYI). Later, he was really insulted when he was named number 100 of Comedy Central's Best Stand Up Comedians of All Time. More recently, he has started selling his old props and other belongings.
It has been suggested that he is bitter, and I guess why I am spending so much time talking about him is that he cracked me up in the 80s. I was able to watch him live in 1997, and the friend going with me noticed that he was a bit...not happy in life. For example, a lot of his routine was about his ex and how he had to go back on tour to pay for his divorce, etc. It wasn't 'funny, ha, ha...I am divorced...what the heck?. It was really sad, and bitter, and almost embarrassing.
The other night, I watched part of his Sledge-O-Matic routine on YouTube, and I couldn't believe how so many rude comments it received. I get that that portion seemed a little stale, but c'mon...it was so long ago! At the time it was quite grand, and the rest of his routine was hilarious. I remember being genuinely excited when one of his new videos would come out.
Anyone else remember watching him?

I remember watching him and not getting it.

maybe he's a required taste
he doesn't look that different, though... esp. considering his health.

didn't he have a "gallegher" franchise? a bunch of guys with moustaches that would smash watermelons under the stage name "gallagher" (kind of like the Julian Schnabel of stunt comedy? )

I don't think you're alone in this, from what I've been reading.
I am not sure about the franchise, though I know he sells merchandise on his website. He also sued his brother for using the same 'Gallagher' and smashing stuff with the Slegde-O-Matic without saying he wasn't the actual Gallagher. So, not sure!

I thought he was hilarious back in his heyday and my dad LOVED him. He came to our town maybe 5 years ago and we went to go see him. It was a little sad. He was having financial difficulties (and still is?) and was having to go to the local grocery stores on his tour to buy the food for his sledge-o-matic.

This is exactly what our experience was back in '97. I guess the continued financial problems are what prompted him to start selling his belongings.
