Toy Soldiers - 1991 movie
I caught this movie on cable this weekend (even though it's sitting right there on my shelf on DVD. Go figure.), and started wondering what happened to all the guys that weren't Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton.

ETA: in case the 15 years since the release wasn't enough time for you to catch the flick (*grin*), spoilers in the comments.

Credit to http://www.lostinthepast.net for the movie screencaps.

Sean Astin .... William 'Billy' Tepper
Sean worked steadily with varying levels of acclaim (From Encino Man to Rudy in one short year) until he found worldwide fame with a trio of movies about some hobbits taking a loooooong walk. Working even more steadily since his return from Mordor, he is currently a regular was featured on "24" this season, has published a book about his life as an actor in an acting family, and can be heard as the narrator on Animal Planet's Meerkat Manor.

Wil Wheaton .... Joseph 'Joey' Trotta
Wil worked fairly frequently throughout the '90s and early 2000s, but has only recently made peace with his somewhat villified "Star Trek The Next Generation" past through his writing. What started as a simple blog has grown into a career as an author. He has published two books and still occasionally books acting roles and voice work. He's recently become a fixture in the world of competitve poker, in person and via blogging. You can read his personal blog and find links to his other works at http://www.wilwheaton.net.

(Poster's note: god, still hot. I've loved this guy since The Buddy System. ::swoon::)

Keith Coogan .... Jonathan 'Snuffy' Bradberry
Keith followed up his Toy Soldiers role with a memorable performance in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead ("Dishes are done, man!") Sadly, his career since then has been slightly less memorable. His last named role mentioned on the IMDB was a 2003 episode of "Joan of Arcadia." Every now and then you'll catch him commenting in Wil's blog.
Then:

Now:

Andrew Divoff .... Luis Cali
Andrew spent some time in the late '90s cementing his role in movie lore as "The Djinn/Nathaniel Demerest" in Wishmaster and its sequel. He's spent the years since then mostly in small roles in various series from "Nash Bridges" to "The Unit," and apparently is big on the horror con circuit.
Then:

Louis Gossett Jr. .... Dean Parker
Louis has had an incredibly active career since Toy Soldiers. Check out the extensive list on the IMDB. And, if you pay attention, you can hear him on your television as the voice of the current US Navy commercials
Then:

Now:

George Perez .... Ricardo Montoya
George has had a variety of small movie and TV guest roles through the '90s and '00s. His most recent IMDB listing is from an episode of Criminal Minds from last season.
Then:

Now:

T.E. Russell .... Henry 'Hank' Giles III
See above re: George Perez, only with more frequency. His last listing on the IMDB is a role in last season's "Cold Case" finale.
Then:

Now:

photo from IMDB.com

Shawn Phelan .... Derek 'Yogurt'
Shawn had a handful of roles in movies and on TV prior to the 1994 car accident that left him in a vegetative state until his death in 1998. Shawn was 19 at the time of his accident, 23 at the time of his death.
Fill out those living wills, kids.
Then:

From the last set of pictures before his accident:

And, for those who're wondering about Joey & Billy's roommate:
Knowl Johnson .... Phil Donoghue
Toy Soldiers capped Knowl's acting career, and beyond 1991, the Internet is all "::crickets::" when it comes to him. If you want more of him, though, he's the other brother (the one that wasn't one of the kids that Charles was in Charge of) in Steel Magnolias, and had some popular voice roles prior to Toy Soldiers.

I LOVED this movie growing up... my best friend and I got all weepy when Wil Wheaton died as we had this giant, fanatical crush on him, hehe. I have this movie on DVD and still love it, heh.

My friend and I went to see this movie in the theatre because I was madly in love with WW.

When he died, I said, "Movie's over, let's go home."

She had the hots for SA, so we stayed til the end. Every time I see this movie, though, I still think "movie's over" when Joey buys it on the steps.

lmfao I was the SAME damn way! haha, I had such a huge thing for Wil Wheaton and I basically sobbed when he got shot and was like "well fuck this, I don't wanna see the rest of the movie."

wasn't he in Adventures In Baby-Sitting?

*confused*

KayJay between_names on October 24th, 2006 11:58 am (UTC)
He was in both, but Adventures in Babysitting was pre-TS.

Thank you SO much for posting this. Shawn Phelan was a good friend of mine who I miss dearly. He was the greatest person you'd ever want to know. Funny, talented, real... Losing him hurt like nothing you'd ever imagine. Knowing that other people still think about him makes me incredibly happy.

I'm sorry for your loss. It must have been awful for him to linger so long like that without hope for recovery.

His TS performance definitely sticks with me. He's definitely remembered.

Thank you. You're very sweet. To be honest, we never gave up hope. I think it was harder though because not many of us ever thought he'd die.

love the movie

Not sure what you mean by wil wheaton's 'villified' star trek experience though
KayJay between_names on October 24th, 2006 11:41 pm (UTC)
Wesley was widely despised by many Star Trek fans. I was not among them (I <3 Wil, so I <3 Wesley) but, for examle, my ex-husband had a bumper sticker he bought at a Con that said "Member: Society to turn Wesley Crusher into a little styrofoam dodecahedron."

It was really small print.

Anyway, people hated Wesley (not all people, but people), and if you read Wil's book Just A Geek, you can read about how he struggled with it, and why he eventually left the role (mostly because he wasn't allowed to work a movie career into his Trek schedule). But, he came to terms with it, and to learn more about that, buy the book ;-)

However, here on his site, Wil does talk about Wesley and his Trek experience: http://www.wilwheaton.net/faq.php#trek

Good movie, great thread!
I always wondered what had happened to Shawn Phelan...how sad indeed! sweetjezebel, I can only imagine how hard taking his death was and also the news of his accident!

I love Wil Wheaton and everything he's ever done...including his role of Wesley Crusher. I, too, cry every time I see him die in this movie...so sad!

I also love Sean astin in every role he's done...even as the 'other' man in "Click" with Adam Sandler :)

I'm way behind here, but Sean Astin wasn't a regular on 24, they killed him off after about 8 episodes.

Thanks. I don't watch 24, so I was going by something I read elsewhere. I edited to update.

I've had mini-obsessions on Sean Astin, Wil Wheaton and Keith Coogan. When I figured out they were all in a movie together, I freaked. Well, I knew about Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton were in it, and watched it happily. But then when my Keith Coogan thing started after I saw Adventures in Babysitting, and I looked at his imdb and was like "HE'S IN TOY SOLDIERS TOO?! SWEET!"

I do love that movie. Except when Joey died...I was very, very upset.
